Honoring Sharath Jois, teacher of teachers
Guru Sharath Jois is considered as the world’s most renowned Ashtanga Yoga expert and during his lifetime became successor to his grandfather, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, continuing the lineage of Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (the “Father of Modern Yoga”). Although born into a yogic family, Sharath’s yoga path was no matter of course. As a young child he experienced illness, eventually taking up learning yoga seriously in his late teens. Once he became his grandfather’s pupil, he practiced with unmatched energy and devotion, eventually becoming a master in his own right after decades of hard work. Sharath was not only an advanced adept at yogāsana, but has also contributed greatly to spreading yoga further around the globe. He was a true beacon and attracted hundreds of students, both Indian and international, to his school in Mysore every year.
On November 12, 2024 he passed away suddenly during a teaching tour in the USA, while on a hiking excursion with students. He is survived by his wife Shruthi, his daughter Shraddha and son Sambhava.
On the 1-year mark of his death, AntwerpYoga will host a traditional Vedic ritual (pūja) to commemorate his life and legacy. Brahmin priest Harinath Sharma will perform the ceremony, to which you are warmly invited. You may sit in silence, listen to mantras, and simply witness. There’s no need to prepare or to know what to do. Just come as you are, with an open heart.
If you wish, you can bring a small offering like fresh flowers, fruit, or dried nuts which is a simple gesture of gratitude and reverence. Donations will be collected to support Harinathji's livelihood. The pūja will last at least 90 minutes and is open to everyone, children are most welcome too!
Coming from a centuries-old distinguished Brahmin priestly lineage, Harinathji has been performing Hindu rituals and Vedic ceremonies since the age of 13. His family, active in India and abroad, specializes in traditional pūjas, weddings, horoscope consultations, and festival observances. With unwavering devotion and precision, they uphold dharma through every sacred rite they conduct.
